Yesterday I was spontaneously asked if I wanted to make a quick little winter ascent of Juarez Peak. I had been looking at this for a few months, and it had interested me, mostly just because it was there. Tyler, Amanda and I got up in the dark morning hours and headed down goat main until we hit Goat 1 spur, at which point we turned up and drove until fallen trees prevented us from going any further at approximately 450M. The first part consisted of walking up a deactivated logging road with some fallen trees and slide alder, eventually we turned off the road and started making our way through the old growth forest, which was quite beautiful, at which point it started getting a little bit steeper. It never got all that steep though, and eventually snowline appeared and we all threw on snowshoes. there were a select few spots where the snowshoes were really doing no good, they started to slide all over the place due to the incline, but it was short lived and low risk. After the semi steep snow at the start of the snowline, the terrain leveled out to a big wide snowfield, pretty sparse of trees, and eventually we reached the rounded lack of a summit just in time for lunch. After taking in the pretty rewarding views for what it was, we made our way back down. The entire descent I was dreaming of skiing. The powdery 20cm layer on top of the stable pack, combined with the 20 degree slope would have made for incredibly smooth sailing. we made it back to the car before dark via the same road, and we hit the main.
