HRP Day 3 stats

1540M Ascent, 1644M Descent

34.49 KM

Day 3 of the HRP started with a fair bit of up and down over mellow trails in the fog. I had been hiking with Malo for the morning, and met another German man too. Later in the morning the trail passed over the "Col de Arburu" that was less than 100 meters shy of the peak of Larrondoko Kaskoa. I explained to Malo that I needed to quickly run up and tag the summit. He waited for me and I left my bag to go up. Larrondoko Kaskoa is just another small basque rolling hill. From the col at Arburu, I ascended another 60-ish meters and went up to the summit. Most of the way was a 4x4 road aside from the very end. There were no view as I was trapped in this infinite white out. The summit had a cross and a survey type marker. After tagging the summit I returned back to the HRP and continued down to the village of Arizkun. After getting a snack and lunch break in Arizkun, the HRP route immediately ascends 600 meters to climb Burga. Burga is the first peak that the route I have been using directly passes over. The ascent was a bit of a slog as it was impossibly humid today and 27 degrees today. Nearly the entire ascent was on exposed gravel roads, making it very draining. Near the summit I had to cross over a barbed wire fence into a cattle enclosure, then trek a bit further through the long grass before hopping the fence again. After the enclosure was a pleasant hike through some open forests with large and funky trees. It was very gorgeous and the ground was as soft as fresh snow due to the thick layer of foliage on the ground. The summit offered a great view unlike the first 3 peaks on this trip. Views of gorgeous Basque rolling hills overlooking the village of Elizondo on display. After recharging on the summit a bit and waiting for Malo, we started the descent into the village of Aldudes where we would spend the night camped out in a field behind the gas station.

Despite the clouds it was still gorgeous
