On my way back to Canada after spending 7 weeks in Europe, my flight had a layover in the Portuguese Azores islands. I was not particularly mad at this due to the fact that it would split my flight into smaller more manageable flights, and I would have a whole day to do whatever I wanted on Sao Miguel island. I landed relatively late in the evening, so I immediately started making my way to my hostel that night. The public transit is quite bad here, so I started walking. Soon some random man pulled over and offered me a ride into town. Usually this is not how hitch hiking works, but he gave a good vibe, seemed helpful, and he happened to be on the same flight as I was just on. We exchanged numbers and agreed to do something the next day before I left. The following day we met up at his rental car and started exploring the West side of the island, we hiked a bit and checked out some beaches, then on the way back to the airport I convinced Andrea to come on one more short hike up the high point of the West side of the island. Pico das Eguas is a p600 but only stands at 873M. The middle of the island is quite flat before the P1K on the other side of the island. We got caught in a bit of a foggy and rainy mist storm for most of the day, so not many views were to be seen. The hike however was easy and enjoyable anyway. The trail was well established with lots of wooden steps and signs. It was a bit of a river though, and a complete swamp at one point, but we still made our way up to the summit, then circumnavigated the small crater around two marshy lagoons before making our way back down to the car. These islands are quite interesting in their volcanically formed geography and humid jungles. It was a lay over well spent.
Flying into Ponta Delgada, Incredible bluffs surround the island,
Pico Das Eguas somewhere in the clouds
The trail was a river in many spots, and a swamp in others
The trail was well built with many stairs
