X Mount Currie

 Mount Currie - 2591M

Even though my original plans for Sunday fell apart, I still had lots of motivation for something big. One of my original partners for the Ipsoot plan, Houman, was also still in. I proposed Mount Currie to him and he was in right away. Mount Currie is not exactly a massively prominent peak for this area, but it's massive North Face that rises out of the town of Pemberton some 2000M makes it a very striking peak. I have not climbed any peaks in this area yet, aside from Matier on the Duffy. Currie seemed like a fitting first one for the area, as all locals know and love it. We met up just before 7 and drove from the MX track to the bridge that crosses the Green River. Just after the river there is a small parking area. We managed to get going at 7AM, and the battle began. This is probably one of the biggest days for a single peak objective in SWBC, with over 2300M of ascent and descent. The first part of the hike consisted of walking up some deactivated logging roads, until we reached the actual trailhead. From here the plod up the forest began. The start was quite tame, but around 700M the trail starts to get a bit steeper. There are lots of switchbacks for the next 500M. I found that the trail was very well designed and extremely simple to follow. It never felt steep like a North shore trail at all. There was tons of blowdown along the trail though. The trail then eased off and passed by a few stagnant ponds, then passed below a rock slide and soom enough we were entering the sub alpine. The summit was still not in sight though, and quite a bit of traversing South was up ahead. The trail now had snow in a fee spots, but it was almost entirely avoidable. We traversed a big boulder field under a sort of Western sub summit. The boulder field soon led to the first views of the ridge we would hike up to the summit. To access the ridge we crossed a small creek, which was the first real good water source. After the creek, and another smaller boulder field, we did a short little scramble up one of the many little gulleys in front of us. Above the little gully was about 400M of small boulders to hike up to the summit. It was a bit tedious, but the final little bit of ridge to the summit was more enjoyable and scenic.
